Blepharoplasty ("Eyelid Surgery")

Blepharoplasty is currently one of the most commonly performed aesthetic procedures but is still regarded as a technically challenging operation that requires thorough understanding of anatomy and function of the eyelids.

The surgical procedure called blepharoplasty reduces droopy eyelids i.e. bagginess from lower eyelids and removes excess skin from the upper eyelids. This eyelid surgery also referred to as an eye lift repairs by removing excess skin, muscle and underlying fatty material. Eyelid blepharoplasty is primarily a cosmetic procedure. Elasticity of skin loses with age, combined with the constant pull from gravity causes excessive skin to collect in the upper and lower eyelids. Fat that cushions the eyeball from the skull can also result in bulging in the upper and lower eyelids.
A cosmetic eyelid surgery will not stop the eyes from aging nor alter the facial structure. It cannot eliminate dark circles under the eyes or facial wrinkles. Eye plastic surgery can enhance the appearance and help building up confidence. It is mostly performed along with laser resurfacing or forehead lifts. The blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery is usually very long lasting. Upper eyelid surgery can last from five to seven years or throughout the lifetime, while lower lid blepharoplasty rarely needs to be done more than once. Blepharoplasty is often done as an elective surgery for cosmetic reasons. Lower blepharoplasty is almost always done for cosmetic reasons, to improve puffy lower eyelid bags and reduce skin wrinkling. Asian eyelid surgery or double eyelid surgery is a special type of blepharoplasty that creates a crease in the upper eyelid. Excess skin on the lower eyelid causes wrinkles and bulges, and extra fold of skin that hang over the eyelashes from upper eyelids obstruct vision. Eyelid lift or upper lid blepharoplasty is an effective method in such patients to improve their vision.

External incisions are made along the natural skin lines of the eyelids, such as the creases of the upper lids and below the lashes of the lower lids during traditional blepharoplasty, whereas in transconjunctival blepharoplasty incisions may be made from the inside surface of the lower eyelid which allows removal of lower eyelid fat without an externally-visible scar, but does not allow excess skin to be removed. External skin resurfacing with a chemical peel or carbon dioxide laser may be performed simultaneously. The transconjunctival blepharoplasty is receiving increasing attention as an alternate technique to traditional transcutaneous blepharoplasty due to the absence of external incision procedures in the former and is safe and effective procedure with minimal complications. An eyelid lift is usually done with local anaesthesia. The surgeon will inject numbing medicine around the eye to avoid pain during the surgery and relaxation medicines relieve anxiety.

The recovery process of laser blepharoplasty is fast compared to the traditional droopy eyelid surgery. The recovery process after a blepharoplasty procedure may take up to few weeks. The recovery time varies greatly among individuals. It is a mildly invasive plastic surgery and the results of aesthetic eyelid surgery may be affected by heredity and lifestyle factors.

Problems with eyelid plastic surgery can include: Bleeding, swelling, infection, dry eyes, and abnormal discoloration of the skin of the eyelids, eyelid skin that folds in or out abnormally, an inability to fully close the eyes or double or blurred vision or a possible loss of vision. Excessive removal of lower eyelid fat can create a hollowness that requires grafting of fat obtained from elsewhere on the body. Removal of insufficient skin is a common problem with post upper eyelid lift resulting in a noticeable bulge, the most direct remedy is to excise a little more. The drawback is the visible scar and the high rate of lid retraction. Some plastic surgeons believe that this technique can result in a higher rate of eyelid drooping due to the muscle disturbance. Blepharoplasty may be risk in individuals with diabetes, dry eye or not enough tear production, heart disease, and high blood pressure or thyroid problems.

Cost of blepharoplasty surgery varies widely in different geographic regions, between different specialties. The cost of blepharoplasty varies significantly between practitioners and in different anesthetic settings. Eyelid surgery price are often dependent on the surgeon's experience too. The cost of eyelid surgery varies with the number of eyelids being operated and the amount of skin and fat that needs to be removed. The upper eyelid blepharoplasty usually requires less work compared to the lower eyelid blepharoplasty and the upper eyelid surgery cost should be less versus lower eyelid surgery. The blepharoplasty cost also depends on whether upper blepharoplasty is accompanied by brow lift surgery. Some of the factors that determine the blepharoplasty cost include the amount and complexity of the work that needs to be done, the experience level of the blepharoplasty surgeon, and the region of the country that you live in.
